The foods that are recognized as heart-healthy (either reducing risks or contributing to stronger heart health) are a major part of everyday traditional Greek cooking. Here are ten recipes (just a small sample of recipes here on the site) based on at least one of the recommended heart-healthy foods (listed in alphabetical order). Another reason why the delicious traditional foods of Greece should be a part of every meal!

1. Dakos: Barley Rusk Meze

Dakos are made with barley rusks, tomatoes, and cheese - a great no-cook choice. Barley is not only a recommended grain, but barley and barley products have been acknowledged by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be effective in reducing the risk of coronary disease.

Beans are part of the legumes (pulses) group that is high in fiber and known to combat heart disease. As simple as this recipe looks, it will fast become a family favorite. 3. Horta: Dark Leafy Greens

Dark leafy greens contain lutein, a great weapon in the heart disease-fighting arsenal. Greek cooks are known for using all manner of dark leafy wild greens to create this delicious salad/side dish. Use your choice of seasonal greens for this easy, delicious, and healthy recipe.

4. Manouri me Frouta: Manouri Cheese with Fruit

Manouri is a naturally produced cheese. Combined with a drizzle of honey, some toasted nuts, and fresh fruit, it's a delightful dessert to add at the end of a heart healthy meal.

5. Maroulosalata: Cos (Romaine) Lettuce Salad

It wouldn't be a meal without a traditional lettuce salad, and Cos (romaine) is the Greek lettuce of choice. This simple combination of lettuce and herbs is a favorite all over Greece.

6. Pasta Elias: Olive Tapanade

Another heart smart meze, this is simply a combination of olives, olive oil, and vinegar. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that is known to reduce heart disease risk. Serve with crusty whole grain bread or breadsticks, on sandwiches, or in other ways - and as always, in moderation.

7. Patzaria Salata: Beet & Garlic Salad

Beets contain betaine and are rich in folate, both known to combat the risk of heart disease, and garlic has long been valued for its help in reducing cholesterol. On top of all that, this salad is easy to make and tastes wonderful.

8. Spanakopita: Greek Spinach Pie

There's no reason to leave this favorite pita (filled pie) off the list. Phyllo dough used for the crust is low in fat, and the spinach and herbs are healthy as can be. This pita is made with olive oil (no butter). It makes a great snack, side dish, or main dish for a light meal.

9. Spanakorizo: Spinach & Rice

Another great dish with heart healthy dark leafy greens, this recipe has few ingredients, is a quick dish to fix, and a delicious and healthy addition to any meal.

10. Yigandes Plaki: Baked Beans

Another dish including high-fiber legumes, this dish of baked yigandes beans (similar to lima beans), tomato, onions, herbs, and spices, is a favorite traditional Greek main dish.
