Greek cooking uses many spices, some easily recognizable and some less well-known, and almost always, grinding your own will give a much more satisfying result. Keep in mind that spices lose flavor as they age, so buy in small quantities and replenish often.
Before arriving in Greece, my spice experience was strictly limited to packaged powders, and I don't think I would have recognized an allspice berry or a nutmeg.
