Clean Monday in the Country

Kathari Theftera (kah-thah-REE thef-TEH-rah)

From , former About.com Guide

Clean Monday, the first day of the Greek Orthodox Great Lent, is a day of celebration. Greeks gather - as families, friends, or entire communities - to enjoy a day of picnics with traditional foods, music, kite-flying, and dancing. Here on a hill overlooking my village, my neighbors, our families, and friends spent much of the day together cooking, eating, laughing, and dancing. Kite-flying is a traditional part of the day, but the winds were gusting to 35 miles per hour so the kites were grounded. That didn't dampen our spirits, and the day was a huge success!
