Out of the Pot

From Lynn Livanos Athan, About.com GuideFebruary 12, 2010

My Mom has a Dutch oven in her kitchen that is over 50 years old and still in service. It's not a fancy pot mind you, but it is as deep as it is wide, and it has a domed lid. She probably purchased it for a few dollars at the five and dime in our old neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

Out of this trusty pot came the great gift of country-style Greek cooking - delectable one pot meals with savory sauces that are perfect for dipping a piece of bread. Greeks love stews and braises and there are many variations of lathera (la-the-RAH) which are mostly vegetarian stews with tomato-based sauces.

Another traditional sauce style is the Egg-Lemon sauce or avgolemono (av-go-LE-mo-no), which is an integral part of many Greek dishes.

Mom used to make us these Greek Meatballs in Egg-Lemon Sauce called youverlakia (you-ver-LAH-kya) in that trusty old kitchen pot. Enjoy them on a cold winter's day, and don't forget the bread!
