After the Holiday Meal(s): Yogurt with Honey

Wednesday December 24, 2008
One of the fondest food memories taken home by those who visit Greece is this simple, yet delicious dessert. Yogurt with honey (yiaourti me meli) combines the rich creaminess and slightly sour taste of Greek yogurt (full fat, lowfat, or nonfat) with a touch of sweetness from the honey, and it is a favorite ending to any meal - an especially good choice after a large (and perhaps heavy) meal.

Yogurt made with live and active cultures (as is Greek yogurt) helps digestion, and has been shown to increase the burn of body fat after a meal. It's also a great source of protein and calcium (and eight other nutrients), and is listed as one of the world's healthiest foods.

An increasing number of grocery stores - from large chains to organic grocers - carry Greek yogurt, but if you can't find it, you can easily strain commercial yogurt yourself to make it thicker and more like the Greek product.
