Tsoureki: Sweet Greek Dessert Bread

From Nancy Gaifyllia, About.com GuideApril 23, 2008

Tsoureki is well known as an Easter tradition, but it's a delightful sweet egg bread often served as a dessert bread, breakfast bread, or snack.

At Easter, tsoureki (τσουρέκι, say: tsoo-REH-kee) is traditionally home-baked on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, and loaves are decorated with dyed red eggs, a symbol of the holiday.

Traditional tastes include gum mastic and mahlab which may be hard to find, and many prefer baking with a bread machines so check out the options below.

Tsoureki Recipes:

Great taste combinations: Tsoureki is delicious toasted and buttered with breakfast; if you like the combination of sweet and salty, try it with feta cheese, and if sweet and sour is a favorite combination, try it with thick Greek yogurt.
