Touloubakia: Small Syrup-Drenched Cakes

From Nancy Gaifyllia, About.com GuideMay 1, 2006

My first encounter with touloubakia (also spelled touloumbakia) was in northeastern Greece on the streets of Komotini where vendors were selling them from carts. The small tube-shaped pieces of fried dough sat bathed in syrup, and were irresistable!

My passion for touloubakia is shared by at least one of our readers. Lydia writes from Australia, "We have been searching for a very long time (3 years!) for a recipe for my favourite sweet, Touloumbakia." So, Lydia - and all other fans of the siropiasta sweets - this recipe is for you.
